About VIP

VIP is studied in the context of neuroscience and cognitive research. Binds the G-protein-coupled receptors VPAC1 and VPAC2, activating cAMP-dependent signaling; produces vasodilation, modulates the circadian pacemaker function of the suprachiasmatic nucleus, and exerts broad immunomodulatory effects.

A central research subject in neuroimmunology and chronobiology, and — as aviptadil — in clinical trials for acute respiratory failure in COVID-19.

An endogenous, well-characterized neuropeptide, not itself an approved drug; the synthetic analog aviptadil was tested in phase 2b/3 clinical trials for COVID-19 respiratory failure but remains not FDA-approved.
