About AICAR

AICAR is studied in research on cellular energy metabolism and longevity. AICAR is phosphorylated intracellularly to ZMP, an AMP mimetic that allosterically activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Activated AMPK promotes mitochondrial biogenesis and oxidative-metabolism genes in skeletal muscle.

Research Application

Known as an 'exercise mimetic': in a widely cited study, AICAR increased running endurance by 44% in sedentary mice without training. Prohibited in competitive sport due to its performance-enhancing potential.

Important to know

Claims circulating online are often not backed by valid clinical data. Treat all information as a starting point for your own scientific research, not as usage guidance.

Not a peptide — a nucleoside analog (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide / acadesine), a naturally occurring AMPK-activating intermediate of purine metabolism.
Research compound, historically also investigated as a drug (acadesine) in cardiology trials; prohibited as a doping agent by WADA since 2009.

Sequence and regulatory status data are based on publicly available sources and refer to the compound in general, not to a specific product.

Research Overview

Research on longevity and energy metabolism is primarily supported by preclinical data.
