About Melanotan I

Melanotan I is studied in dermatological and anti-aging research, e.g. in relation to skin and pigmentation models. Unlike non-selective melanocortin agonists, MT-1 primarily activates the MC1 receptor on melanocytes, stimulating melanin production without meaningful effects on appetite- or sexual-function receptors.

Research Application

Studied in pigmentation research, including in connection with photoprotection in photodermatological conditions. The closely related, MC1-selective formulation afamelanotide is the only FDA-approved melanocortin peptide in this group (erythropoietic protoporphyria).

Claims circulating online are often not backed by valid clinical data. Treat all information as a starting point for your own scientific research, not as usage guidance.

Synthetic analog of alpha-MSH, selective for the MC1 receptor
The FDA-approved formulation (Scenesse/afamelanotide, 16 mg implant) has been approved since October 2019 for erythropoietic protoporphyria — one of the few melanocortin peptides with formal approval.

Sequence and regulatory status data are based on publicly available sources and refer to the compound in general, not to a specific product.

Research Overview

The evidence base for skin and pigmentation peptides is largely based on preclinical and early clinical investigations.
