Lyophilized Powder: More Robust Than Its Reputation
Freeze-dried (lyophilized) peptide powder is significantly more stable than the reconstituted solution. Brief temperature fluctuations during transport typically alter stability only marginally – it's still important to store the powder dark and refrigerated per the manufacturer's instructions once it arrives.
After Reconstitution, the Cold Chain Becomes Critical
Once a peptide has been reconstituted with bacteriostatic water (BAC water), the situation changes fundamentally: the dissolved form is significantly more susceptible to degradation from heat, light, and repeated freeze/thaw cycles. From this point on, continuous refrigeration at 2–8°C is the standard – do not freeze, as freeze-thaw cycles can damage the peptide structure.
A simple visual check helps with assessment: before mixing, look for condensation or a damaged seal on the vial. After mixing, the solution should be clear to slightly opalescent – cloudiness, particles, or discoloration indicate degradation or contamination.
The Tesamorelin Exception
One exception to the “always refrigerate” rule concerns tesamorelin – but only in its FDA-approved formulation (Egrifta): the single-dose formulation is mixed immediately before use and not stored; the weekly formulation contains stabilizers that allow room-temperature storage for up to seven days. Research-grade tesamorelin is not identical to this – without those stabilizers, refrigeration at 2–8°C still applies.
